What is the difference between psychiatrist, psychologist, psychoanalyst, psychotherapist - big job titles but what do they actually mean? Let's do some simple unpacking ...
- A psychiatrist is a medical practitioner who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and can prescribe medicine.
- A psychologist is an expert or specialist in psychology; a person who specialises in the study of the mind and behaviour or in the treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioural disorders.
- A psychoanalyst helps clients tap into their unconscious mind to recover repressed emotions and deep-seated, sometimes forgotten experiences. By gaining a better understanding of their subconscious mind, patients acquire insight into the internal motivators that drive their thoughts and behaviours.
- A Psychotherapist (counsellor) helps individuals who are experiencing emotional and psychological difficulties to understand their problems and to make appropriate changes to their lives.
